5 Dysfunctions of Team and Impact on Team Dynamics

Team culture directly impacts team performance. Team members require right skills to deliver expected outcome. Teams also require domain and technical experts to take key decisions. However even teams with the best skilled and experienced people fail to deliver right quality outcome sustainably.

In order to deliver quality outcomes at a sustainable speed, teams need to be long lasting. Team members need to work together for a longer period of time to develop team bonding. Team stability depends on team culture. Team members stay longer when teams encourage transparent and collaborative culture. It is important for the team to understand their current ways of working and identify the behaviours that need to be changed.

Patrick Lencioni in his book “The 5 Dysfunctions of a Team”, talks about how each team behaviour cascades to impact the end outcome. Once teams are aware about what behaviour is impacting their performance, they can collectively agree about the required change.

Absence of Trust – Trust is the foundation of a strong team. Team members lacking trust on each other will not share learnings and will not be willing to support each other.

Fear of Conflict – Team members lacking trust challenge each other to put their idea forward, however fail to agree on the best possible solution. Such teams will avoid constructive debate.

Lack of commitment – Team members are committed when they are able to contribute to the solutions. Teams trying to avoid constructive debate due to fear of conflict will also have lack of commitment as end goal decided by only by the key members without taking input from everyone.

Avoidance of Accountability – Members are not accountable for end-to-end outcome when they have not contributed to the solution. They feel they just need to complete their own work without paying attention to the end result

Inattention to result – As every member pay attention to individual goal, team goal is compromised impacting the quality of the end result.
